Design Guru, Thom Filicia Turns to modo for 3D Interior Design Visualization
3D Tool Used in Support of TFI and Karastan's "Decorating from the Floor Up" Design Seminar
San Francisco, Calif. – July 31, 2007 – Luxology® LLC, an independent technology company developing next-generation 3D content creation software, today announced that modo™ was used to create photorealistic interior shots for "Decorating from the Floor Up," an exciting new collaborative design seminar spearheaded by Thom Filicia Inc. (TFI) and Karastan. TFI worked closely with the Luxology staff and several independent artists who used modo's robust modeling, painting and rendering toolset to design a series of photorealistic computer-generated images that illustrate how to achieve a variety of stylishly designed interiors. Known for his insightful decorating expertise on the hit TV series Dress My Nest and the Emmy® award-winning Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Thom Filicia is an acclaimed interior designer to the stars and is widely recognized as one of the leading tastemakers in the design world.
"I became personally involved in this project because I have tremendous respect for Thom's work and wanted to experience first-hand the requirements for world class interior visualizations," said Brad Peebler, president and co-founder of Luxology. "TFI was unwavering in what they wanted - we had to emulate the real-world designs perfectly. By combining the exceptional talents of three Luxology community members with modo's powerful modeling and rendering features we were able to deliver beautiful images that exceeded TFI's expectations."
"I wanted to see how far we could push 3D technology to get believable interiors that would stand up in front of the most discriminating audiences across the country," said Thom Filicia, president and founder of TFI. "These computer-generated images have stunned audiences in every city I have shown them. I believe that products like modo will fundamentally impact how designs are developed and refined going forward."
The Process
The project began with TFI sending photos of two different rooms to Luxology. Working with three modo community members (Yazan Malkosh, Neil Hayes, Ahmed Alireza), Luxology modeled the rooms in modo, using the photos and other reference information. All the 3D assets - walls, windows, flooring, furnishings and accessories - were modeled with great precision using modo. TFI then provided mood reference boards that contained textiles, colors and other design material references; these were scanned and processed into seamless, tile-able texture maps using Luxology's imageSynth software. The textures were then combined with the 3D assets inside modo, and camera angles and lighting were adjusted to get the desired mood. Luxology worked closely with TFI throughout the digital design process and was able to complete photorealistic renderings of both rooms within a two week time period. Upon approval of the two final images, Luxology stripped the rooms of all furnishings and created a "build up" sequence. The digital sequence starts with an image of a bare room that is sequentially filled in with Karastan carpeting, wall treatments, furnishings and accessories. The final collection of computer-generated images introduces two professionally designed rooms that convey the impact of TFI's expertise and design aesthetic.
"Decorating From the Floor Up" LIVE! with Thom Filicia began in May with seminars in Chicago and Boston. Two more locations are currently being finalized for the fall tour.
